Held to Think

A calm online maths companion that helps your child find the step beneath a hard question, work it through, and reach the answer themselves.

From Pollyana Academy. Coming soon.

The idea, simply

Most maths help corrects a child the moment they slip, and hands them the answer. Held to Think does the opposite. When a question becomes hard, it gently helps your child find the smaller step underneath it, settle that step, and then return to the original question and reach it on their own.

It does not give the answer, and it does not mark work right or wrong. It helps your child prove the answer to themselves, and explain, in their own words, why it holds.

How it works

  1. Your child meets a question. They work it online, typing each step.
  2. If it becomes hard, they can tap "this is hard", or ask for another way, or simply submit an answer that does not work yet.
  3. The companion offers a smaller step. It steps down to the skill underneath, in three small, sure pieces, until your child is on firm ground. They always choose whether to step down.
  4. They climb back up. Back to the question that was hard, now standing on something steady, and they reach it themselves.
  5. They say why. Once a new idea is met, your child explains in their own words why their answer makes sense. That is how understanding becomes their own.

What makes it different

Who it is for

Children working in maths from about two years before the 11-plus, through Key Stage 3, to GCSE and IGCSE, across the main exam boards. You tell us your child's stage and board when you join, and the work is shaped to them. A separate programme for life-long maths beyond GCSE is planned for later.

With a parent alongside

You hold the account and set things up; your child does the work in a calm, maths-only space. After each session you receive a short, plain summary of what your child met and steadied, and a gentle next step. Nothing is shown as a score, and nothing is dressed up.

Safe by design

Held to Think is built for children, with care taken from the start.

We are completing our data protection and safeguarding work before any child uses the companion, which is why we are opening to a small group of early-access families first.

A place for every child who needs one

For every family that subscribes, we set aside free places for children who could not otherwise take part. More on this when we open.
